Sharing and Networking Microbial Information Resources

To increase awareness of BIOTEC Culture Collection (BCC) and facilitate access to information and biological materials developed at BIOTEC to the scientific community, we have implemented an online service at http://www.biotec.or.th/bcc where researchers can search, browse and order strains of their interest in a mouse click. At the national level, we have also involved in the establishment of the information network on culturable microbes, known as Thailand Network on Culture Collections (TNCC), by supporting web-based tools for data sharing among network members and providing the users with one stop web-based information services at http://www.biotec.or.th/tncc. In regional data network, the ISL staff has participated in a working group to develop and standardize the networking data among 12 Asian countries members of the Asian Consortium for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Microbial Resources (ACM).

The integrated ACM database is currently also available at the http://th.abrcn.net. We expect that scientists in Thailand and neighborhood countries would benefit in easier accessing information from integrated database.

Participating in various networks, it is required to improve the ability in dealing with information to be shared and interoperated with different data standards and platforms. Hence, we have implemented a system called CC-SHARE to (1) achieve information sharing between BIOTEC and any information networks, and (2) to make primary microbial data rapidly available to users. The CC-Share platform is an XML-based system, so interoperability with other systems or networks is assured. While managing the TNCC data network, we are improving the data integration by utilizing the ontology model to support semantic interoperability among heterogeneous databases across organizational border.
